Laboratories

The Architectural Engineering Department has several specialized laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, serving both educational and research needs of the students and faculty. The labs are managed and supervised by experienced Faculty members and technicians. The department continuously upgrades the laboratories with the latest new equipment to best assist in achieving the program’s objectives.

The Architecture Engineering Department has eight different established laboratories, which are the Computer Labs, Digital Fabrication and Model Making Lab, Building Illumination and Acoustic Lab, Building Energy Lab, Natural Lighting Lab and Urban Planning Lab.

Architectural Engineering students additionally use some of the Civil Engineering Labs as per their course’s needs (example:  Surveying Lab).

Computer Labs

The AE department’s Computer Labs are fully equipped to handle most students’ needs including design projects and the production of drawings at various scales. They are also heavily used in students’ training in building design applications (AutoCAD, Revit etc.). All computer labs are equipped with state-of-the art computing hardware and printing facilities. The computer labs are managed by a Lab Specialist, whose AE background, offers optimum assistance to students beyond their basic computer needs.

Digital Fabrication and Model Making Lab

The digital fabrication and model making Lab enables students to produce more accurate models of challenging building designs. The availability of the lab to male and female is segregated on a time managed basis. Additionally, the Lab may be booked based on specific needs under the supervision of the lab specialist.

Building Illumination and Acoustic Lab

The Building Illumination and Acoustic Laboratory include state-of-the art building illumination and acoustic equipment. It has several Sound Pressure Level meters and a Room Acoustics Analyzer which is capable of measuring reverberation time and sound transmission loss through building materials.

The Building Energy Laboratory is the latest addition to the AE Department. It is planned to grow to better respond to students’ instructional needs as defined by the integration of sustainability in all courses of the program as well as play an active part in the overall country’s quest for improved energy efficiency in the built environment.

Natural Lighting Lab

The daylighting lab serves both quantitative and qualitative daylighting research with specific focus on clear skies characterizing the desert region of the Arabian peninsula. It has benefitted from a substantial 867,000 AED funding in 2013 used towards the purchase of a LED based 3m diameter artificial sky for daylighting and solar simulations studies.

Urban Planning Lab

The Urban Research Laboratory was jointly created using both College and research funds. It serves the graduate program; urban planning track, faculties’ research and consulting. Additionally, it is open to undergraduate students interested in urban planning to gain hands-on experience with urban planning and urban design processes. The Laboratory has high end computing equipment and GIS.
